I have found a growing number of people in Manitoba who are interested in alternative ways of living and living off the grid. It harkens a new, practical movement towards less resource consumption and living lighter on the land. I find it largely a quiet revolution, a subsurface activity that happens without many people knowing about it, or if they do, they don’t fully understand it. As a writer, this is something that I want to write more about, and learn about in the process. In that process, to also help others try to understand it.
The Adventure of You

One couple engaged in this movement is Kris Plantz and Nicole Bennett. I had the pleasure of meeting them a few years back around the time when they began their journey. I followed the development of their Earthship Build, and really liked what I found there. It was a material application of permaculture, which is a sustainable system of design. A community grew up around them during the course of the build. It was fascinating to watch things and people come together for them. The Earthship Build was something that I liked and felt was important. I took off my fiction hat and put on my journalist hat and started a slightly different path. I wanted to raise awareness of Earthships, learn more about them and share what I found.
The result was an interview with Nicole and a subsequent article. I found a publisher for it, and am working with them for a summer publication date. I will post more about this closer to that date. I must say it is really awesome to have a publisher, but not as awesome to hear the story of the Earthship firsthand.
I really enjoyed writing nonfiction for the first time in years. It’s definitely something that I want to do more of. And I want to do more interviews with other people who are on a journey living off the grid. If you are someone who is doing that, or know someone who is, I’d love to connect. Contact me here and we’ll go from there.
